Had you not tossed me naked into the wind,
I could have stayed and would have sinned.
Had you not silenced the song I longed to sing,
I’d still be your maid and you, my king.
Had you not choked the throat from which my notes rang,
With rich timbre, refrains that sang,
An anthem of love might resonate today;
Now strains of amity fade away.
