           The Marketing Minute
by Marcia Yudkin, Marketing Expert and Mentor

           *******************

Bragging is saying something positive about yourself with
the intent to impress others, and according to studies by
marketing professor Irene Scopelleti of City University
London, people overestimate the extent to which others enjoy
hearing about their successes and underestimate the
annoyance others feel at their bragging.

When something wonderful has happened that you're dying
to share, then, how can you convey your news so you're not
perceived as conceited, egotistical or tiresome?

* Communicate in a tone of surprised excitement. This
reduces the sense that you're trying to impress others.

* Frame your accomplishment as the success of a cause, so
others who support that cause can also feel good about what
happened.

* Add the achievement to your credentials without any
hoopla. There it quietly boosts your reputation with
those who check you out.

In general, by being firmly grounded in your own competence,
you convey you know what you're doing, without self-
importance or boastfulness. You're like the doctor who once
straightforwardly told me he could help with a problem that
had stumped his colleagues: "Look, I've been around so long,
I've seen everything."
