READER Review I have much to learn
"5 starsI can't recommend this book highly enough!
By Paul Carr on September 7, 2018
I first read Sam's book in 2015. Just read it again. It has been a valuable resource for me. It removes the mystery of my father's abuse of me as a child which for decades I dealt with by denying it ever happened. The author's description of the somatic narcissist fits my father, now long since deceased, to a tee. The questions that have tormented me are answered in this book. First and foremost, the question of why my father did it. Why did he program me starting as a 7 year old boy to be his loyal, adoring lieutenant, pulling me away from making friends of my own age during and after school like normal 7 year old kids and upwards do. Other questions answered are: Why did he succeed? And what were his techniques of abuse?
His book goes further and explores the relationship dynamics of the narcissist with, for example, his spouse. The "danse macabre", as he describes it, between the narcissist and the inverted narcissist fits, to my mind, the relationship between my mother and father.
Sam Vaknin is a man, I think, decades ahead of his time. He first wrote his book in 1995/1996 and has helped bring the discussion of narcissism into the public square, even if many of these armchair experts shoot way of target. In the early half the 19th century, the honor shame culture of Britain and the United States (and thereafter the rest of Europe) gave way to a new guilt based individualistic culture. Certain practices such as duelling were no longer socially sanctioned. What in effect was happening was that hardcore psychopaths (the Robert Hare definition) were being "run out of town", ostracized, removed from respectable and responsible positions of power. In the unfolding empathic civilization of the 21st century, I think a wider swath of psychopath, including the more subtle forms such as narcissistic personality disorder and borderline personality disorder types are also being "run out of town" and rightly so, given the risk they pose to all of us in positions of power and responsibility in particular. Sam Vaknin is exposing the activities and attitudes of these more insidious psychopaths (I use psychopath here in the broader sense of non-empath, not the Robert Hare narrow sense of the word) to the cold light of truth. In so doing, he is contributing powerfully to global peace and security.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I read the e-book where frequent keywords link to his website where he provides up to date detailed information on understanding further the tragic psychological affliction of narcissistic personality disorder. I have much to learn. Thanks, Sam!"
